First: two kinds of watch party tools
- Sync tools keep play, pause and seek in step while everyone plays the video on their own account. Full quality, no black screens, but everyone needs access to what you watch.
- Shared-room tools play one browser or player for the whole room. Easy to start and some work on phones, but you watch the room's stream, not your own.

Built-in watch parties are disappearing
Streaming services have been removing their own watch party features: Disney+ GroupWatch ended in 2023, and Prime Video's Watch Party was removed later. If you relied on those, a separate tool is now the way to keep watching together.
