Short answer: Teleparty syncs Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max and Prime Video so everyone plays on their own account, with free text chat and calls on its paid Premium plan. Discord's Watch Together Activity syncs YouTube in a voice channel, but for Netflix and similar services people screen-share, which often shows a black screen. Many groups combine the two: Teleparty for sync, a Discord call for voice.

How Discord Watch Together works
Watch Together is a Discord Activity for watching YouTube together with a shared playlist, and Discord keeps the video in sync. You start it from a server voice channel, a DM or a group DM, on desktop or mobile (desktop needs hardware acceleration turned on). It doesn't cover Netflix or other paid streaming services.
Why Netflix goes black when you screen-share on Discord
For streaming services, Discord users fall back to sharing their screen, and the video often shows up as a black screen for friends. That's the main reason people move to a sync tool. Our watch party vs screen sharing guide explains the difference.
On the legal question: we can't give legal advice. Each streaming service's own terms apply to your account, so read them if you're unsure.
The common combo: Teleparty + a Discord call
Because Teleparty's free plan has sync and text chat but no calls, a lot of groups run Teleparty for the video and hop in a Discord voice channel to talk. It works, but it means two apps, two windows and keeping both open. See Teleparty free vs Premium for what the paid plan adds.
Pick Teleparty if
- You're watching Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max or Prime Video and want real picture quality
- Some of you use Edge or Safari
- Text chat is enough, or you're fine paying for calls
Pick Discord if
- Your friends already hang out on Discord
- You're mostly watching YouTube
- Some of you are on phones
Another option: sync and calls in one with Watch Party
If you'd rather not juggle Teleparty and a Discord call, Watch Party puts both in one place:
- Keeps play, pause and seek in sync, and everyone plays on their own account, so no black screen
- Free group video and voice calls in a side panel
- Works on sites with a standard video player
- Guest mode, with optional Google sign-in
- The trade-off: desktop Chrome only, with no phone app like Discord
