Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Creating rooms, syncing video, chat and video calls are all free.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start or join a watch party as a guest. Signing in with Google only adds friends, direct messages and settings that follow you across devices.

Which browsers does it work in?

Desktop Chrome.

Which sites does it work on?

Websites with a standard HTML5 video player, including the major streaming services, YouTube, Twitch, anime sites and more.

Do we need the same subscription?

Yes. Everyone plays the video from their own account, so each person needs access to what you're watching. That's also why the quality stays perfect for everyone.

How many people can watch together?

The host sets the room capacity for each room, up to 500 people.

Can we video call while we watch?

Yes. Group video and voice calls are built into the side panel, along with chat and reactions.

Can I watch with friends in another country?

Yes. Everyone streams on their own connection, so distance doesn't affect quality. The title needs to be available in each person's region.

Can strangers join my room?

Only if you make it public. Private rooms are invite-only.

Do you see or record what I watch?

No. Only a timestamp and play or pause state are synced. The video is never captured or re-streamed. The address of the page your room is watching is shared with people in that room.

Is a watch party like this allowed?

Each person watches on their own account, and nobody's video is copied, recorded or re-streamed. Watch Party only keeps play, pause and the timestamp in sync. Each service's own terms still apply to your account.

Why do friends see a black screen when I share Netflix?

Netflix and most streaming services protect their video, so screen shares show black. Watch Party doesn't share your screen: everyone streams the video themselves and only the playback is synced.

Does it work on phones, TVs, Safari or Firefox?

No. Watch Party is a Chrome extension for desktop Chrome.

Are calls recorded?

No. Calls are peer-to-peer between participants and are never recorded or stored on our servers.

The video isn't in sync. What do I do?

Refresh the page, check everyone has the same video open and is signed in to the service, then rejoin the room. More fixes in our troubleshooting guide.
