Watch party not syncing? Fix it in a minute

Video out of step, one person behind, audio not matching, or a friend can't join? A quick triage plus fixes by symptom, for any watch party tool.

Most sync problems have the same handful of causes, whichever watch party tool you use. Run the 60-second triage first; if that doesn't do it, jump to your symptom.

The 60-second triage

  1. Everyone refreshes the video page

Fixes pages that loaded before the extension was ready, or after it updated.
  2. Check it's the same video

Same title, same episode, same page. A trailer or the wrong season looks like a sync problem.
  3. Check everyone can play it

Signed in, has the subscription, and the title is available in their country.
  4. Leave and rejoin the room

    Then press play again.

One person keeps falling behind

  • Slow connection: let the video buffer for a few seconds, or lower the quality in the streaming site's settings.
  • Too many tabs or apps: close heavy tabs, especially other videos.
  • Ads: if only that person gets an ad, they'll be behind until it ends.
  • VPN: a VPN can change the region and the title, or slow everything down. Turn it off and refresh.

The sound doesn't match the picture

This is almost always the player or the device, not the watch party:

  • Pause and play again, or refresh
  • Bluetooth headphones add delay; try wired ones or the laptop speakers
  • Update your browser and close heavy tabs

A friend can't join

  • They need the same watch party extension installed in a supported desktop browser
  • Have them paste the full room code or link
  • They must be signed in to the streaming service, with access to the title
  • Make sure they're on desktop: browser extensions don't run on phones or TVs

The service's own watch party disappeared

Some services removed their built-in watch parties: Disney+ GroupWatch ended in 2023 and Prime Video's Watch Party was removed later. If that's what stopped working, a separate watch party extension is the way to keep watching together.

Using Watch Party?

Run the triage above first. On the guest side, joining with the room code in Paste room ID brings you to the same video. Still stuck? Email watchpartyapplive@gmail.com with the site you were watching on (not the title), whether you were the host or a guest, and what happened. Using Teleparty? See Teleparty not working.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my watch party sync?

The most common causes are a page that loaded before the extension, people on different videos, someone not signed in or blocked by region, and slow connections. Refreshing the page and rejoining fixes most cases.

Why is the audio out of sync with the picture?

That's usually the video player or device, not the watch party: pause and play again, refresh the page, close other heavy tabs, and check Bluetooth headphones, which add audio delay.

Why isn't Amazon Prime Video Watch Party working?

Prime Video removed its built-in Watch Party feature, so it no longer appears. A separate watch party extension can keep Prime Video in sync instead.

Do ads break sync?

They can. If one person gets an ad and the others don't, they fall behind. Let the ad finish, then use the room to bring everyone back to the same point.

Press play once. Everyone watches together.
