Short answer: pick Watch2Gether for quick YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion or SoundCloud nights with no account and no install, including on phones. Pick Teleparty to watch Netflix, Disney+, Hulu or Prime Video on everyone's own account, in Chrome, Edge or Safari. If you want free video calls while you watch on desktop Chrome, there's a third option below.
The core difference
They solve the same problem in two different ways:
- Teleparty is a sync extension. Everyone opens the video on their own streaming account, and Teleparty keeps playback in step and adds a group chat. The picture is each person's own stream, so everyone needs access to the show.
- Watch2Gether is a shared room. You create a room, paste a link, and everyone watches in the room's synchronized player. It's strongest with YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and SoundCloud. Its site also mentions Netflix, Amazon and Disney.
Teleparty vs Watch2Gether at a glance
| Teleparty | Watch2Gether | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Syncs each person's own stream | Shared synchronized room player |
| Best with | Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Prime Video | YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, SoundCloud |
| Free plan | Sync + text chat on free channels | Free, no account needed |
| Paid plan | Premium (voice and video chat, more) | Paid upgrade exists |
| Seeing each other | Voice and video chat on Premium | Text chat + webcam in the room |
| Devices | Chrome, Edge, Safari | Web, PWA, extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge |
Where Watch2Gether is better
- No install, no account. Send a room link and people are in. Good for big, casual groups.
- Phones. It runs in the browser and as a PWA, so friends on mobile can join.
- YouTube-style links. Queue up clips and music videos in one shared player.
- Webcams for free. You can see each other in the room without paying.
Where Teleparty is better
- Streaming services on your own account. Everyone watches their own Netflix or Disney+ stream at full quality instead of a room player.
- More browsers than most sync tools. Chrome, Edge and Safari.
- Familiar. It's the tool formerly called Netflix Party, and its how-to flow is four steps: install, open a video, click the TP button, share the link.
The catch: on Teleparty's free plan you only get text chat. Voice and video chat need its paid Premium plan. We break that down in Teleparty free vs Premium and Teleparty video call.
A third option: Watch Party
Watch Party is a free Chrome extension that keeps play, pause and seek in sync on any site with a standard video player, so YouTube and streaming services both work. Everyone plays on their own account, and free group video and voice calls sit in a side panel next to the video.
- Good for: seeing each other while you watch, on streaming sites or YouTube, without paying for calls
- Not for: phones, tablets, TVs, Safari, Edge or Firefox (desktop Chrome only)
How it compares to Teleparty directly is covered in Teleparty vs Watch Party.
