Short answer: both keep a show in sync while everyone plays it on their own account. Teleparty runs on Chrome, Edge and Safari, but its voice and video chat need a paid Premium plan. Watch Party includes group video and voice calls for free and works on sites with a standard video player, but it's desktop Chrome only.

Calls: the biggest difference

On Teleparty, talking face to face inside the party is a Premium feature; free users get text chat. Many people work around that with a separate Zoom or Discord call, which we cover in Teleparty video call. In Watch Party, group video and voice calls are part of the free extension, next to the video in a side panel.

Sites and devices

Teleparty focuses on a list of major streaming services and is available on three browsers, which matters if your friends use Edge or a Mac with Safari. Watch Party works on sites with a standard video player, so you can also use it for anime sites, lectures or smaller services, but only on desktop Chrome.

Neither tool is a screen share: everyone watches at full quality on their own account, which is why both avoid the black-screen problem described in watch party vs screen sharing.

Choose Teleparty if…

  • Someone in your group uses Edge or Safari, or wants to join from mobile
  • You only watch the major services it supports
  • Text chat is enough, or you're happy paying for Premium calls

Choose Watch Party if…

  • You want video and voice calls without paying
  • You watch on many different sites, not only the big streaming services
  • Everyone is on desktop Chrome
  • You want guests to join without creating an account
