How to have a long-distance movie date (that feels like the real thing)

Watch a movie with your partner in another city or country: in sync, on a video call, at a time that works for both of you. Setup, time-zone planner and ideas.

A woman on a sofa at night and a man at a desk in daylight in another city, smiling at the same mountain-lake scene on their laptops

The short version: pick a time that works in both of your time zones, open the same movie on your own accounts in desktop Chrome, keep it in sync with a watch party extension, and start a video call so you can see each other react. When one of you pauses, it pauses for both.

What you need

  • A computer each with desktop Chrome
  • Access to the movie on each account (both of you need the service, and the title has to be available in both countries)
  • A watch party extension with video calls. Watch Party is free and has the call built in, so you don't need a second app.
  • Headphones so the film doesn't echo into the call

Set it up in 5 minutes

  1. Both install the extension

Add Watch Party to Chrome. No account needed.
  2. One of you opens the movie

Go to the film on your streaming service.
  3. Create the party

Click the Watch Party icon, press Create Watch Party and send your partner the room code.
  4. Your partner joins

They paste the code into Paste room ID and land on the same movie.
  5. Start the call, press play

Open the video call in the side panel, then press play. Pauses and rewinds happen for both of you.

Pick a time that works for both of you

The hardest part of a long-distance movie date is usually the clock, not the tech. Look for the overlap where it's evening for one of you and still a reasonable hour for the other.

Times shift with daylight saving, so double-check the week you plan. Save long films for the weekend and shorter ones for weeknights.

A date plan: before, during, after

Before (15 minutes): dress up a little, make or order the same food, and send each other a photo of your setup.

During: keep the call small so the film stays the star, use chat or reactions for the funny bits, and pause for a snack break together.

After (the best part): leave the call running when the credits roll and talk about it. That's half the date.

What about phones and TVs?

Watch Party is a Chrome extension, so it works on computers only. If one of you only has a phone, either use an app built for mobile, or keep a video call open on your phones and count down to press play on the TV. Counting down works, but you'll drift out of sync every time someone pauses.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do a long-distance movie date?

Pick a time that works in both time zones, open the same movie on your own accounts, use a watch party tool to keep it in sync, and start a video call so you can see each other react.

What's the best app for a long-distance movie date?

On computers, a watch party extension with built-in video calls keeps the film in sync and puts your partner next to it. Watch Party does that for free in desktop Chrome. If one of you is on a phone, look at an app-based option instead.

Do we both need Netflix?

Yes. Each of you plays the movie from your own account, which is also why it's full quality for both of you. The title needs to be available in both countries.

Can we do a movie date on our phones?

Not with a browser extension. Watch Party runs in desktop Chrome. If you're both on phones, choose an app that supports mobile, or start a video call on your phones and count down to press play together.

How do we handle a big time difference?

Pick the overlap where it's evening for one of you and late morning or lunch for the other, and keep weeknight dates shorter. The planner table above shows common pairs.

Press play once. Everyone watches together.
