Short answer: Netflix Party is now Teleparty. Its own site describes it as "Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party)". It still works on Netflix, and now also on Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max and Amazon Prime, with party creation on YouTube too. If you searched for the old Netflix Party extension, Teleparty is the same idea under a new name.
What happened to Netflix Party?
It was renamed. The extension that started as Netflix Party now goes by Teleparty, and the new name fits what it does today: it no longer only works on Netflix. Teleparty lists Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max and Amazon Prime, and says it's available on Chrome, Edge and Safari.
So if an old guide tells you to "install Netflix Party", look for Teleparty instead, and install it from your browser's official extension store, not a download site. (More on that in are watch party extensions safe?)
How to use Netflix Party (Teleparty) today
Teleparty's own guide uses the same four steps on every service:
- Install the extension in a supported desktop browser and pin it to the toolbar.
- Open the video you want to watch on Netflix (the episode or movie page, not the home screen).
- Click the TP button to start a party.
- Share the party link. Friends who open it are guided to install the extension and join.
Everyone needs their own Netflix account with access to the title in their country. If something goes wrong at any step, see Teleparty not working.
What's free on Teleparty?
Teleparty's free plan includes video sync and text chat. Voice and video chat are part of its paid Premium plan, which has a 7-day free trial. The full breakdown is in Teleparty free vs Premium, and if calls are what you're after, see Teleparty video call.
Does Netflix have its own watch party feature?
Not in the browser. Netflix doesn't have a built-in watch party button, which is why people use extensions like Teleparty or the one we make. Screen sharing a Netflix tab on a call is the other common workaround, but it often shows a black screen and looks worse for viewers: see watch party vs screen sharing.
Options if you want free video calls
If you want to see and hear each other while you watch without paying for it, Watch Party is one option:
- Free group video and voice calls in a side panel, plus chat and reactions
- Keeps play, pause and seek in sync, and everyone plays on their own account
- Works on sites with a standard video player, including Netflix, not a fixed list
- Guest mode, with optional Google sign-in
Where Teleparty fits better: it supports Edge and Safari and has a mobile app. Watch Party is desktop Chrome only.
