The method that works for any group: everyone opens the same movie on their own account in desktop Chrome, a watch party extension keeps it in sync, and you add a video call or chat so you can react together. What changes with group size is how you run the room.
Step 1: Make sure everyone can play the movie
| Where the movie is | What each person needs |
|---|---|
| A subscription service (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu…) | Their own account, and the title available in their country |
| A movie you rent or buy | Their own rental or purchase |
| A free, ad-supported service | Access in their country; ads may break sync briefly |
We don't link to unofficial movie sites. Stick to legal services: they're safer and the quality is better.
Step 2: Set up the watch party
Everyone installs
Add Watch Party to desktop Chrome. Free, no account needed. The host opens the movie
On the service everyone uses.Create the party
Click the icon, press Create Watch Party, share the room code.Press play
Friends join with the code. Play, pause and skips happen for everyone.
Step 3: Run the room for your group size
2 people: keep the video call visible; it's closer to a date. See the long-distance movie date guide.
3–8 people: video call on for everyone, chat for running jokes. Agree that anyone can ask for a pause.
10–20+ people: chat for everyone, video call for a smaller group, and mute when you're not talking so the movie stays audible. One person hosts and controls playback.
Make it a night, not just a stream
Themes, snacks across distance and games are in the virtual movie night playbook.
Short version: watch movies together online. On Netflix? See watch Netflix together. For YouTube: how to watch YouTube together. New to all this? What is a watch party?
